The controversial gym accessory made simple—your guide to lifting straps.

What are lifting straps?

Weightlifting straps are cloth or leather pieces that can be wrapped around your hand and the bar to make heavy lifts easier to grip. Lifting straps are most commonly used among bodybuilders and gym-goers.

Why use lifting straps?

There is a lot of debate around the subject of using lifting straps. Much of the stigma that lifting straps are “cheating” come from the powerlifting community as lifting straps are not generally allowed.

Often times the target muscle we are training is a lot stronger than our grip strength—lifting straps allow you to fatigue your muscles without your grip failing.

Common exercises lifting straps are used for:

  • Romanian deadlifts
  • Rack pulls
  • Dumbbell or barbell rows
  • Shrugs
  • Deadlifts

If you can’t hold onto the bar long enough to fatigue the muscle, there is no shame in wearing lifting straps. There is no doubt that using lifting straps will increase your strength/muscle gains.

Three Types of Lifting Straps

Hook Straps -These are probably the least common among the types of straps available. There is absolutely no wrapping necessary with these straps however, the hook is not compatible for speciality bars and can impact your lifting technique.

Olympic Straps - Also known as speed straps, these one loop straps are perfect for attaching to the bar quickly and bailing out quickly. Due to there being less material, you can not adjust speed straps to tighten around your wrist and the grip tends to be less secure than other strap options.

Loop Straps -Also known as Lasso lifting straps. These are the most versatile straps on the market and extra fabric allows for perfect adjustment around the wrist and bar. However, these are not commonly used for Olympic lifts as it is difficult to bail out due to the access fabric.

How to Strap In (Loop Straps)

First off, there is no right and left strap—both are exactly the same. What differentiates the two is how you put them on.

To put on your right hand lifting strap, keep the logo facedown in your right palm and grab the other end with your left hand. Put the left through the loop to create yourright hand lifting strap. Want to double check that you did it right? When you pull it tight, the strap should run between your thumb and index finger.

For your left hand, the same process but starting with the logo facedown in your left palm.
